13/12/2005 - New Delegation Chosen to Operate the Eiffel Tower
The agreement signed in May, 1981 between the CITY OF PARIS and the SNTE with the SAGI, which entrusted the management and daily operations of the Eiffel Tower to the SNTE, is to expire on December 31, 2005.

In accordance with the law decreed on January 29, 1993, the CITY OF PARIS set in motion the procedure during the year 2005 that would name a new company to handle the management of the Eiffel Tower as of January 1, 2006.

Three companies were being considered. On December 13, the Council of Paris attributed this public service to the SOCIÉTÉ D’EXPLOITATION DE LA TOUR EIFFEL (SETE). This appointment will take effect on Sunday, January 1, 2006 at midnight for a duration of 10 years.

SETE is a semi-public company, whose capital is mainly owned by the CITY OF PARIS (approximately 60 %).

13/12/2005 - A New Esplanade for the Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower square has been completely redone and the central octagon-shaped sandpit eliminated. Heavily damaged after numerous years of wear and tear, the dusty esplanade no longer provided the comfort nor aesthetic qualities expected by its guests from such a world-renowned monument.
The total surface sprawling from the Avenue Gustave Eiffel to the Quay Branly was stripped and covered anew with an asphalt coating. This material was chosen for its tint that blends well with the site, as well as for its resistance to shocks and bad weather.

From November 10, 2005 to January 1, 2006 a photo exhibit of the Eiffel Tower taken by Robert Doisneau over a time span of 40 years (1943 – 1986) will be on display on the first floor of the Tower.

Discover the day to day scenes of the Tower (The Sweeper – 1950, Tourists in Line – 1969, Barefoot Siesta in the Grass – 1950), Parisians and foreigners (Mother and Daughter with White Ribbon – 1950, Wooden Horses Pulled Along by the Guardian – 1969, American Tourist Eating Ice Cream – 1950, The Traditionally Dressed Brittany Woman – 1950), and other unusual scenes (The Distorted Eiffel Tower – 1979). Salting the Tower platforms is impossible due to the corrosive factor on the metal and sprinkling sand on the ground is not allowed as it could cause problems for the elevator mechanism.
