14/10/2004 - Eiffel Tower Exposed in Shanghai
From October 13 – 20, 2004 the Eiffel Tower is being honored in Shanghai. This marks the second phase of a cultural exchange agreed upon by Jean-Bernard Bros & Mme Niu Weiping in France, and the President of the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai.
Last January, the Eiffel Tower had presented photos of the city of Shanghai and had organized a week around the Chinese cuisine at the restaurant Altitude 95.
For the week in Shanghai, the SNTE has organized a large format photo exhibition portraying the Eiffel Tower and the city of Paris as seen from the Tower, on display in the welcome hall of the Oriental Pearl, this most famous tower dedicated to telecommunications. Located in the heart of the modern Pudong work district on the shores of Huang Pu, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower features five spheres and is among the tallest buildings in the world at 468 meters (1535 feet).
As a well-frequented tourist spot – around 3 million visitors yearly, mostly Chinese, the Oriental Pearl Tower’s welcome hall is also the entrance to an incredible wax museum telling the history of Shanghai.

15/09/2004 - The Tower Welcomes the Chinese
Since September 1, and following the agreement at the 6th EU China Summit meeting, Europe has opened its doors to visitors from the Republic of China and that includes a hearty welcome from the Eiffel Tower.

The number of Chinese who have the means to travel is estimated at 1%. Taking into account the country contains 1.3 billion inhabitants that mean almost 13 million are ready to travel. In the past, the Chinese represented 450,000 visitors with professional visa status to come to France each year, while some 800,000 are expected to land in Europe in 2005.

The Eiffel Tower, Inauguration Stopover
The Chinese delegation arrived on September 1 and visited the Eiffel Tower the next day.
Furthermore, the Eiffel Tower had a very active voice in the promotion of China in Paris, especially for the Chinese New Year when the Tower adopted the color red for the occasion and also for the occasion of France in Shanghai.

16/07/2004 - The Olympic Flame in Paris: Last Stop Eiffel Tower
The festive spirit surrounding the Olympic Torch Relay made its way to the Eiffel Tower on June 25. Following a concert and motorcycle parade of the Republican Guard, the torch arrived at the Tower around 8:30 pm for its final stretch of the 50-kilometer course through Paris.
A relay runner ascended with the flame via the South pillar stairs, passing it on to 400-meter hurdle racing champion Stéphane Diagana, who descended the Tower from the first floor sliding down an alpinist rope to the foot of the monument.
The flame was then passed on to fencing sportswoman Laura Flessel who had the honors of finalizing the day’s relay.
Some 10,000 onlookers then gathered at the Champ de Mars, and took seats on the grass to watch that evening’s World Cup match on a giant screen under the glistening Eiffel Tower.

16/07/2004 - Eiffel Tower Poll of Greater Parisian Population
The TNS Sofres Institute conducted a poll during the month of June, at the request of the SNTE, asking those living in the greater Paris region about the reputation of the Eiffel Tower. The conclusions of this telephone survey given to 1008 persons 15 years or older were intended to be informative of this population’s view of the Tower’s activities and to better know their expectations.

Visits: 85% have visited the Tower at least once.

Image: 85% consider the Tower a very exceptional site.

Most interesting activities: Concerts and shows

And finally they consider the monument a priority spot when visiting Paris.

16/07/2004 - Athletic Photo Exhibit
In honor of the Olympic Games in Athens, the Champ de Mars – near the Ecole Militaire - is hosting a photo exhibit featuring a number of athletic champions in France. Sponsored by the Mayor of Paris, which presented a similar exhibit last summer at the Hotel de Ville, this expo is the initiative of France’s champion pole-vaulter Jean Galfione and the proceeds will go to the association ''Sports without Borders'' and the financing of a program for young people in Afghanistan. The exhibit, which was first presented on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower, will run from July 16 – August 29.

13/07/2004 - Bastille Day
A spectacular Bastille Day presentation is in the works for this 2004 edition, organized by the Mayor of Paris. On July 14, the fireworks extravaganza will begin at 10:30 pm; during 40 minutes, a fireworks display – launched not only from the traditional Trocadero site but also from the Tower gardens - will include an accompanying concert at the base of the Eiffel Tower as well as special light projections. And that is why the Eiffel Tower must announce that, exceptionally, it will close at 6pm to make way for the festivities.

08/06/2004 - June 25: the Eiffel Tower is Stopover for Olympic Torch Event
This coming June 25th, Paris will welcome the Olympic torch along its path to Athens. Forty-four torch-bearers relay one another as they cover some 50 kilometers in and around the Capital. The starting point is the Stade de France at noon, expected to arrive at the Eiffel Tower at 7:45 pm. One of the torch-bearers will climb the stairs to the first floor using the South pillar stairs. An alpinist will carry the torch back down as he maneuvers down a rope from the first floor to the place below where an official cortege waits. A 350-meter descent!

The crowds are expected to gather in the Champ de Mars garden where giant screens will broadcast the Euro 2004 quarter-final soccer match.

At the end of the match, the Eiffel Tower will emit a one-minute firework display, symbolic of the Olympic flame.

08/06/2004 - Mountain Bike Record Filmed for France 2 TV Program
Wednesday, May 26 at 7:15 am, Xavi Casas, Andorran mountain bike champion, set out to climb the West pillar Tower stairs on his bike.

The 25-year old champion, seriously injured two years ago, had twice accomplished the feat, step by step up to the second floor. In order to beat his record, he had to climb more than 1,300 steps. The climb which included a service elevator – without ever touching ground – took him 34 minutes and 31 seconds, one half the time of the challenger who came in ten steps less than the winner. The champion’s new feat was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records by ex-basketball champion Barry White, who followed the course up on foot behind the cyclist…a feat of its own merit!

The weekly ''Envoyé Spécial'' TV program film team also followed the event, which will broadcast the mountain bike feat in October during a special program devoted to the 50th anniversary of the Guinness Book of World Records.

20/04/2004 - Survey of Eiffel Tower Visitors
The operating company SNTE has decided to do a survey of visitors to the Eiffel Tower. It is expected to get underway during the month of May and continue until the end of the year. The objectives are two-fold:
- obtain a ''photograph'' of visitor topography (profiles, nationalities, characteristics, last Tower visit.)
- collect appreciation marks and better meet the expectations of visitors to the Tower.

18/03/2004 - North Pillar Elevator Gets New Speed Reducer
Removing the speed reducer from the elevator was already a feat in its
own right, and now its time to install the new one. Factory approved and
ready for installation, the new reducer weighs in at 30 tons, identical
to the old one. As the new one is on its way to the Tower, the workmen
are already sizing up the situation and calculating the difficulty of
hooking up the valves to the bearings. The task is expected to be
completed by the end of May.

18/03/2004 - Reception for Gustave Eiffel Descendants
In honor of the 80th anniversary marking the death of Gustave Eiffel,
the SNTE invited his descendants to the Eiffel Tower. A party of 20
arrived on Saturday, February 14, welcomed by Jean-Bernard Bros &
Jacques Marvillet.

Following the family portrait in front of the statue of their
illustrious forefather, they all went to lunch at the Altitude 95
restaurant. Some of the family members even went on a stroll at the top
of the Tower.

Gustave Eiffel had five children, four of which had several children of
their own. They have formed an association, Association of Gustave
Eiffel Descendants, presided by Sylvain Yeatman-Eiffel (center of
photo). Sylvain Yeatman-Eiffel is the great, great grandson of Claire
Salles who is one of the more familiar children; she is represented in
the reconstituted office of Gustave Eiffel on the top of the Tower.

Gustave Eiffel died in 1923 at the age of 91. Today his descendants have
reached the sixth generation.

16/02/2004 - Paris is Candidate for the Olympics in 2012
More than 30 television stations and another 30 radio and newspaper journalists were all present January 16th in the Gustave Eiffel room of the Tower to hear the Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë elaborate on the details of the city as a host for the Olympics in 2012.

And this he did from financing to infrastructures, logistics and the actual proposed sites, backed by the Sports Minister Jean-François Lamour, national Olympic committee president Henri Sérandour as well as key sportsmen such as David Douillet.

If Paris does indeed host the 2012 Olympics, two main sites for the games will be the Stade de France and Roland Garros. At the foot of the Eiffel Tower, volleyball competitions will be held in the Champ de Mars.

28/01/2004 - Oriental Pearl Tower Meets Eiffel Tower, Jan 28 – Feb 1, 2004
The Eiffel Tower invites its visitors to discover the Chinese gourmet and cultural delights arrived directly from the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai on Wednesday Jan 28 to Saturday Feb 1, 2004.

This operation is the fruition of an agreement, in the framework of an exchange program put in place between France and China, signed by Paris’deputy mayor and Eiffel Tower president Jean-Bernard Bros and the Oriental Pearl Tower president Ms Niu Weiping in Dec 2003.

A Touch of China on the First Floor

Adopting Chinese New Year décor and colors, the Eiffel Tower first floor is presenting:

* A large photo exposition on the terrace overlooking the Champ de Mars, representing the Oriental Pearl Tower and its state of the art architecture.
* A culinary tasting of Chinese specialties, served at the Altitude 95 restaurant. The menu was especially concocted by three Chinese chefs who came expressly from Shanghai for the occasion.
* Each day at 5pm (17h), a demonstration of the traditional tea ceremony at the Altitude 95 bar performed by two hostesses from the Oriental Pearl Tower.
* And souvenirs to correspond with your “Chinese” visit, at the Pavillion Ferrié boutique.

The Oriental Pearl Tower

* Measuring 468 meters (1535 feet) high, the Oriental Pearl Tower is also a tower accessible to visitors, with three floors made out of pearls. The view over the modern city of Shanghai is unbeatable and it offers a revolving restaurant. The basement level houses a wax museum representing the history of the city.
* This Pearl Tower welcomes three million visitors each year - Chinese for the most part - and like the Eiffel Tower, it is an important telecommunications transmitter.

23/01/2004 - The Eiffel Tower Adopts Red for the Chinese New Year Celebration!
At the bidding of a French/Chinese Commissariat, the Eiffel Tower will be beaming red lights for the first time in its history and will be doing so for the occasion of the Chinese New Year this Saturday, January 24, 2004.

Relying on the spotlights on the outer Tower, the most celebrated monument in Paris will turn on scarlet red lights, symbolizing happiness, joyous festivities and prosperity. Following the Chinese New Year parade on the Champs-Elyséees, the Chinese and French Culture ministers as well as the mayors of Peking and Paris will be present at the “lights on” ceremony at the Tower.

Sponsored by the company Electricite de France, the red lighting will last for five days until the morning of January 29th, visible each day from 5pm to 7:30am.

And so as not to exclude its international admirers, the Eiffel Tower’s Internet site will also turn on the red lighting during the same hours!
