12/12/2007 - Visit the Arctic Regions

An Arctic Winter on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower from December 19, 2007 to March 9, 2008

The Eiffel Tower, in collaboration with Le Cercle Polaire1, invites you to “Visit the Arctic Regions”:

  • a photo expedition into the heart of the Arctic and Antarctic, meet the 21st century Inuit and discover the polar fauna,

  • put on snowshoes for a trekking at 57 meters above Paris to January 31, 2008

  • and stop in at the Umiak bar for a frozen treat right here in the Capital!

A visit to the Arctic regions during this first winter season of the International Polar Year 2007-2008*2
This outdoor exhibit “Visit the Arctic Regions” - installation and concept by the association Le Cercle Polaire - presents 80 photographs and their commentaries:

  • the life of the people living at the North Pole in the 21st century, the Inuit

  • an initiation into the diversity and fragility of the fauna in the polar regions for Tower visitors

  • and a selection of short films that shed light on the work of scientists in those regions and their outposts observing global warming.

Thirty photos by Xavier Desmier show the Inuit daily life at the dawn of the 21st century. In just 50 years, they have quite naturally created a new cultural balance between ancestral traditions and modern life. Today their great enemy is melting icebergs.

Maison polaire

… put your snowshoes on.
Following the random trail of animal tracks, visitors can walk around the outer first floor covered in a thick layer of snow: a 300-meter walk for an initiation to snowshoe trekking, with Paris as the backdrop.

These genuine snowshoes3 available for big and small, will allow visitors to go on an unusual exploration of the native species of the Arctic and Antarctic: bears, narwhals, reindeer, snow geese, penguins, snow petrels, albatross…Immortalized in the large-format photos portraying animals captured on camera during numerous expeditions to the arctic regions, this fauna is endangered by global warming.

At 57 meters above Paris, icy thrills are guaranteed at Umiak*, a polar bar on the Eiffel Tower! Looking over the Champ de Mars, an ice-covered bar will welcome “trekkers” into its polar décor: life-size arctic animal sculptures (seals, polar foxes, guillemot…) and mannequins displaying traditional costumes made by Inuit. An unusual stopover for a drink, day or night.

23/10/2007 - The Eiffel Tower is participating in Operation "5 minutes respite for the Planet "

The Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE), in agreement with the City of Paris, decided to join Operation 5 minutes respite for the Planet ", which was organized to draw attention to energy consumption and its impact on global warming.
The decorative illumination of the tower will be extinct for 5 minutes on Oct. 23 between 7:55 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., security lighting remaining in operation.

The SETE, responsible for the management and operation of the Tour, wants to show its commitment to sustainable development and the preservation of our planet.

Regarding energy consumption, many activities were carried out:

- A "green electricity" with EDF (100% of the electricity supplied comes from renewables)
- A campaign to change the lamps illuminated monument conducted in 2004 / 2005 have resulted in a 30% reduction in energy
- Use management software dedicated to controlling the timing of the lighting and heating
- The elimination of refrigeration systems, water loss

The SETE provides systematically in contracts with its dealers a chapter dedicated to sustainable development (reducing energy consumption, sorting and recycling of waste, material selection healthy).

The SETE will continue and will intensify its efforts in this direction, particularly in the implementation of important projects of renovation and modernization of the Tour, it will lead in coming years

Energy consumption of the Eiffel Tower is 7,000 megawatts, of which 6% for illumination.

19/04/2007 - Exhibit: : The Eiffel Tower in films
Opening April 20th on the first floor of the Tower

At the end of the 19th century, the Eiffel Tower and filmmaking were the very essence of modernity thanks to engineers like Gustave Eiffel and the Lumiere brothers.

During the 20th century, the Eiffel Tower became the symbol of Paris and France throughout the world.

From the beginnings of cinema to today, the Tower has dominated film posters. Its presence sets the scene or gives the works a timeless, romantic quality.

This exhibit looks at a century of the Eiffel Tower on the silver screen via the 31 film posters on display.

14/02/2007 - The Non-Smoking Tower
In compliance with the latest French legislation, the Eiffel Tower is a non-smoking environment as of February 1, 2007, with the exception of the restaurants.

12/02/2007 - The Eiffel Tower participated in ''5 minutes of Rest for the Planet''
La Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE, Eiffel Tower operating company) in collaboration with the Mayor of Paris joined forces for ''5 minutes of Rest for the Planet'', organized in parallel to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change meeting held in Paris, with the intention of influencing public opinion on energy use and global warming.

The Eiffel Tower night lighting system was turned off during 5 minutes on February 1st between 7:45 and 8:00 pm, with only the security lighting left on.

With this action, the SETE intended to show their commitment to sustainable development and the preservation of the planet.

On a more long-term basis, a number of daily actions have been instated such as recycling batteries, printer cartridges, outdated computer equipment, metals and gas lamps. The recycling of paper has effectively been in place for some time now.

Certain energy efficiency actions were also instated:
-A special ''green'' contract was drafted with the electrical company EDF (100% of the energy required comes from renewable energy).
-The campaign adopted in 2004-2005 concerning light bulb replacement on the Tower has already helped reduce energy use by 30%.
-A computer-automated schedule to control the heating and lighting on the Tower.
-Eliminating refrigeration systems with water loss.

The SETE is systematically overseeing the concessionary contracts so as to include a full paragraph on sustainable development (reducing energy consumption, sorting and recycling waste, suitable materials…).

The SETE intends to pursue and intensify its actions in these directions, notably by putting into place important renovation and modernization projects for the Tower during the years to come.

The Eiffel Tower energy consumption is at 7,000 MW/H, of which 9% is dedicated to the Tower illumination.

19/01/2007 - New Record in Number of Visitors to the Eiffel Tower in 2006
With 6,719,200 visitors in 2006, the Eiffel Tower has topped its all time high in visitation, showing a 4.5% increase over 2005 (6,428,441 visitors).
As for ticket sales, they were up 5% for a total of 48.7 M€ (VAT non-included).

More than half climb to the top
The Tower is open during long hours every day of the year – 9:30am to 11:45pm in winter, 9:00am to 12:45am in summer – with 30% of the visitors arriving during the evening hours. 55% go to the top of the Tower and 20% prefer the stairs when climbing to the 2nd floor (704 steps). Groups make up 13% of the total visitors.

Panoramic view and organized activities
The Paris vista seen from the monument is of course one of the major attractions. Visitors are also wooed by the structural force of the Tower, including its evening splendor when the Tower turns on its golden lighting and glittering lights that flash at the stroke of the hour.
A variety of activities are available on the monument (from the Cineffel films relating the history of the Tower to the Feroscope that explains its construction and painting as well as the Observatory that records the movement of the tower top...), appreciated by visitors that want to know more about Gustave Eiffel’s creation. More recently, the Tower has been offering other activities (exhibits, ice skating, roller skating or the labyrinth that is presently open to visitors) that appeal to visitors and generate media coverage contributing to the fame of the monument.
