NEW YEAR’S EVE WILL LIGHT UP AT THE EIFFEL TOWER |
On December 31, you can watch the light show live, starting at 11pm : click here
For the first time, the Eiffel Tower will bring in the New Year brightly: on December 31, the Tower will light up in a palette of colors offering a truly festive and magical sight for the eyes!
For the first time, the city of Paris and the Eiffel Tower are hosting a light show for the occasion, to the delight of Parisians and visitors to the capital, with the Trocadéro as the vantage point for best viewing.
At 11pm the light show will glow; an original program will begin, only to come to an end as the New Year arrives.
The usual glittering lights will light up the Tower at 11pm, and will then be repeated at 11:30 pm, this time followed by a never-been-seen-before light display lasting 20 min. The LED technique used is state-of-the-art, and of course, will end with the symbolic countdown to 2010.
At midnight, the glittering lights, a familiar sight in the Parisian night sky, will begin the New Year.
And in a grand finale, the most recent light show*, which began on October 22, will present its colors for the last time, giving way to the permanent gold lighting of the monument.
All the elements are in place to assure that this will be a memorable New Year’s Eve.
This display relies on a light installation of more than 400 LED spotlights with electroluminescence effects in quadrichromatic color, placed on the facades of the Trocadero buildings. In addition to the innovative multiple lighting possibilities, this latest technology offers high performance at low energy consumption levels, lower than those of the traditional lighting fixtures used to light the Tower.
The light show is brought to you by Citelum, with Magnum, and is staged by Bernard Schmitt (scenography) and Jacques Rouveyrollis (light design).
* Light displays every evening at 8:05, 9:05, 10:05 and 11:00, to be admired from the Trocadero.

LIGHT SHOW TO CELEBRATE THE 120 YEARS OF THE EIFFEL TOWER |
You won’t want to miss this special event!
Every evening
from October 22* to December 31, 2009
at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm and 11pm
In honor of this memorable anniversary, the Eiffel Tower is inviting Parisians and visitors in the Capital to join in the festivities of this innovative light display.
For the first time, relying on state-of-the-art LED spotlights, the Trocadero facade of the Tower will light up in color, movement and modulation offering a magical and awesome show.
With the intent of giving everyone an opportunity to see this must-see event being offered to Parisians, the light show will be presented four times each evening, at 8pm so the young ones can still get to bed on time and then again at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm.
Following the 5 minutes during which the tower sparkles, this special light display will last another 12 minutes, starting with a dynamic light sequence evoking the extraordinary construction site of the Tower. Next a shower of light, revolving from level to level, facetted, stroboscopic, rhythmic, color blending…a splendid tribute to the Eiffel Tower and its majestic structure. During the light show, the other facades of the monument will contribute an element to the choreography. Also, images will be projected onto the ground below.
The technology behind this light display is based on the 400 LED (light-emitting diode) spotlights with electroluminescence effects in trichromatic color placed on the Trocadero façade of the monument. In addition to the innovative multiple lighting possibilities, this latest technology offers high performance at low energy consumption levels, lower than those of traditional lighting fixtures already used to light the Tower. Indeed, the SETE, operating company of the Eiffel Tower, has taken numerous concrete steps in the direction of energy saving solutions: a green electricity contract, light bulb changes in 2005 that reduced energy consumption by 30%, system software that controls the hours of lighting and heating, and finally, the hourly sparkling lights have been reduced from 10 to five minutes every evening on the hour.
Light show design by Bernard Schmitt & Jacques Rouveyrollis, implemented by Citelum with Magnum.
Citroën, a lighting partner of the Eiffel Tower in its earlier days (1925-1934), has once again contributed to the Tower illuminations. For the occasion, Citroën will present its new C 3 model and stream the light show of October 22 on their website in exclusivity (www.citroen.fr ou www.citroen.com).
Eiffage Group is sponsoring this celebration of the Eiffel Tower’s 120 year anniversary.
*Attention, special program October 22: show times are 9pm, 9 :30pm, 10pm, 10 :30pm and 11pm.

WEST PILLAR ELEVATOR CLOSED FOR RENOVATION |
Modernization of one of the historical elevators is underway, undertaken by the SETE (Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel). The West pillar elevator will be closed to the public during renovation. Visitors will have access to the Tower at the North, South and East pillar elevator entrances.
Visiting hours have not changed: the Eiffel Tower is open every day from 9:30am to 23:45pm (9:00am to 00:45am in summer).
RENOVATIONS
The West pillar elevator will function as before once the construction has been completed, even though a number of modifications* will transform the system, notably by adapting past technology to the new system so as to adhere to the SETE’s commitment to sustainable development.
Technology adapted to sustainable development
It’s almost as if Gustave Eiffel could foresee the future - concerning the notion of sustainable development - since the elevator system is perfectly adaptable to modern technologies.
- A more ecological system
Following the overhaul of the West pillar elevator system, it will be the “historical” hydraulic circuit that will be emptied of the more polluting oil used to today, to be replaced by a more “ecological fluid” that is close enough in consistency to eliminate compression problems encountered by a simple water system.
- Less of an energy-guzzler
Upon completion, the elevator’s electric consumption (300KW) will be sufficient to carry 110 passengers (instead of the 92 person maximum load at present) at the speed of 2 meters per second.
- A high-tech system
A glowing WiFi cable running the length and breadth of the cabin will guarantee a constant synchronization with the control center.
*Technical information concerning the elevator renovation
The mechanical functions that are maintained : - - the lift drive piston system (following appraisal),
- - the large pulleys,
- - the tackle pulleys.
To be replaced : - - the cab,
- - the cab platform,
- - the rail mounting of the platform,
- - the hydraulic system,
- - the electric ropes.
HISTORICAL NOTICE
Since the opening of the Eiffel Tower for the Universal Exhibition of 1889, visitors have been able to visit the different floors of the monument via elevators. But even in their early existence, the changing technologies of the day led Gustave Eiffel to modernize the elevators for the Universal Exposition of 1900.
A formidable technical feat for the period as never before had engineers tackled such constraints of height and elevator loads. The Eiffel Tower hydraulic elevators located at the East and West pillars of the monument offered hundreds of thousands of visitors, as early as 1889, an ascent in total security to 116 meters above ground for a look out at the city of Paris below.
Up until 1986, the fuel-injected hydraulic motors set the lift drive piston system in motion, but today, two of the three accumulators have only the simple task of counterweights.
Preserved with great care, they attest to the technical heritage and achievement that genius and visionary Gustave Eiffel contributed to our present day.

A WORLD OF SCHOOLING |
PHOTO EXHIBIT by Olivier Culmann & Mat Jacob
21 October 2008 to 31 January 2009
1st floor of the EIFFEL TOWER
Free entry for all visitors to the monument
The Eiffel Tower is open every day from 9:30am to 23:45pm
An exhibit showing more than 60 photos devoted to the children of the world and their school environments. In this way the Eiffel Tower hopes to reach out to young visitors everywhere and offer a discovery of the Tower’s history in a fun activity newly created entitled “Follow Gus”.
During several years, Mat Jacob and Olivier Culmann travelled the planet observing the different school systems, the establishments of our childhood and innocence where our personalities were faceted. This series of photos “A World of Schooling” was born from this shared pursuit*.
The first floor exhibit space of the Eiffel Tower invites you to discover these images of school kids from 5 continents and 20 countries.
“Because we were reticent to go there, because we only felt liberated after having left the place, because it was there that our spirits were opened as well as compartmentalized, we went back to school.
Our quest was to know whether school was a way of imposing certain ways of thinking or truly the way to provide children with the intellectual might that, later in life, would help them find their own way. The situations that we encountered were so different, even contradictory at times, which underlies the fact that when we terminated the project, we realized that the places where we were looking for answers only conjured up more questions. The fact that we were led to question and doubt is of course dear to us, more so than the fact to have worked on a documentary project about the “real” world of schooling.
The worlds we visited and that we show you here represent our impressions, our memories and our souvenirs. “
* The photos in this exhibit were taken between 1993 and 1999.
Mat Jacob took the photos in Haiti, Cuba, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Canada, the United States, Mexico and France. Olivier Culmann took the photos in Rumania, Pakistan, Bolivia, Albania, Japan, Cameroon, Mauritania, Mali, India, Russia and the United Kingdom.
Both photographers were born in Paris, Mat Jacob in 1966, and Olivier Culmann in 1970. Both work regularly with the French press and are members of the photo group TENDANCE FLOUE. - www.tendancefloue.net. They both were Villa Médicis winners in 1997.

THE EIFFEL TOWER: BEACON TO BEACON |
PHOTOS EXHIBIT BY JEAN GUICHARD From June 11 to September 15, 2008 FIRST FLOOR OF THE EIFFEL TOWER
Free access to the exhibit for all visitors to the monument. The Eiffel Tower is open everyday from 9:30am to 11:45pm and from 9am to 12:45am from June 13 to August 31.
Lighthouses are a universal symbol around the world and that includes the beacon atop the Eiffel Tower, which lights up the sky over Paris nightly. At present, the Eiffel Tower is honoring other lighthouses in a photo exhibit of 80 pictures taken by photographer Jean Guichard, specialist in maritime history. This outdoor exhibit on the first floor of the monument opens the way for the public to discover these lighthouses that orient seafarers, right here in Paris while visiting the Tower. Beacons in the spotlight on the first floor of the Eiffel TowerPainted red, white and navy blue; made of stone or brick; standing high above a sheer drop, these lighthouses will take visitors to the French coast, from the Cape of Raz to the Bay of Quiberon or the Golf of Ajaccio. A mix of vista views and once-in-a-lifetime moments captured on film, such as the enormous spiral staircase leading up to an oil platform beacon or a glimpse inside a lighthouse station. Located on the Eiffel Tower first-level platform looking out over the Champ-de-Mars, the exhibit displays spectacular images portraying the enduring nature of the pictured beacons, standing up to the violence of the sea.
Whether frozen over with ice, whipped by the sea or towering over oil slicks, these lighthouse photos are not to be missed. Extending its horizons beyond the French coast, this exhibition takes the visitor on a world tour offering magnificent images of lighthouses from Iceland, the UK, the USA… The Tour Eiffel Lighthouse
As early as 1889, Gustave Eiffel was busy in the drawing room, making plans for the beacon to be set atop the tallest structure in the world, which would sweep the sky with beams of blue, white and red covering a distance of 100 kilometers! The finishing touch to the pièce de résistance of the Paris Universal Exhibition. In 1947, interest in using the Eiffel Tower to help orient air navigation became obvious. From the Tower heights, visibility and geographic range were far more impressive than the lower altitude of Mount Valérien where a rather powerful beacon had already by installed. Two beacons were mounted on the Tower summit in order to give the impression of one single light source from a distance. In 1970, the Civil Aviation Agency refused to carry out the needed fixing. Coupled with the fact that air traffic over the capital city had become forbidden, the beacon was replaced with the usual red lights placed on factory smokestacks. Installed once again as a permanent fixture for the occasion of the new millennium in the year 2000, the two light beams sweep the Parisian sky reaching out 80 kilometers. Four motorized “marine” flood lights are piloted by a micro computer installed with specific automatic programming so as to control their movement. Each one rotates 90° in the form of a cross so as to create a double-beam of light pivoting 360°. A book entitled “Lighthouses” was published by Reader's Digest and includes numerous photos presented in this exhibit, available in the Eiffel Tower shops. Jean GUICHARDOnce an agency photographer working for the prestigious Sygma and Gamma, Jean Guichard has been a freelance photographer since 1995. Since the 80s, Mr Guichard has pursued his passion for maritime history through his lens and obtained the World Press Prize in 1989 for his famous shot of the Jument Lighthouse and its guardian. His work has been garnered other awards, notably the Concarneau Best Illustrated Book Award as well as the laureate of the Naval Academy in 1992 for his book “Lighthouses.”

The parisian chronicles 70 years of daily life in Paris From the collections of the Roger-Viollet Agency |
|
Photo Exhibit March 30 – June 1, 2008
“The Parisian Chronicles” is a major milestone exhibit programmed to celebrate the 70 years of existence of the Roger-Viollet Agency. The Parisian framework that offers the first floor of the Eiffel Tower is as timeless as the photos of Paris in the exhibit, including some rarely-seen images from the Agency’s collections.
70 photos to discover on the first floor of the Tour Eiffel, 57 metres above Paris …
As you stroll in and amongst the photos on display on the first floor, you’ll travel back in time to the years 1880 – 1950 casting a glance on tender moments, sometime humorous, delicate or intriguing. Continue down familiar streets or go down a few new ones, or follow the charm of Paris from the Luxembourg Gardens to the Quai des Fleurs where flowers and plants are sold. And then go back in time to the Universal Exhibition of 1900 or the floods of 1910, the hordes of Parisians taking a stroll on the Grands Boulevards or small groups enjoying a private music concert…
Together this accumulation of fleeting moments reconstitutes the spirit of the city and its inhabitants, where the Eiffel Tower silhouette stands tall in the photos since those of Agency founder Henri Roger.
Reflections from one to another, these photos offer the visitor a promenade down memory lane, Paris of days gone by.
Roger-Viollet Agency
October 14, 1938, Hélène Roger and her fiancé, Jean-Victor Fischer, take over the photo shop of Laurent Ollivier, located at 6 rue de Seine and founded “Documentation Photographique Générale Roger-Viollet”.
After WWII, Roger-Viollet bought up numerous collections constituting one of the biggest photo banks in Europe by 1960. These collections span more than a century and a half of world history: major events, craftsmen, Beaux Arts, science and politics, the streets of Paris and exotic travels, and of course, famous portraits and candid moments.
This photo heritage – more than 6 million works and documents, which today belong to the city of Paris – also follows the development of photography via the works of photo studios during the Second Empire up to the era of photo reporters capturing the wars of the 20th century.
A book accompanies “The Parisian Chronicles” exhibit, published by Chene as part of the Roger-Viollet publications, available in the Eiffel Tower shops.

Visit the Arctic Regions |
An Arctic Winter on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower from December 19, 2007 to March 9, 2008
The Eiffel Tower, in collaboration with Le Cercle Polaire1, invites you to “Visit the Arctic Regions”:
- a photo expedition into the heart of the Arctic and Antarctic, meet the 21st century Inuit and discover the polar fauna,
- put on snowshoes for a trekking at 57 meters above Paris to January 31, 2008
- and stop in at the Umiak bar for a frozen treat right here in the Capital!
A visit to the Arctic regions during this first winter season of the International Polar Year 2007-2008*2…
This outdoor exhibit “Visit the Arctic Regions” - installation and concept by the association Le Cercle Polaire - presents 80 photographs and their commentaries:
- the life of the people living at the North Pole in the 21st century, the Inuit
- an initiation into the diversity and fragility of the fauna in the polar regions for Tower visitors
- and a selection of short films that shed light on the work of scientists in those regions and their outposts observing global warming.
Thirty photos by Xavier Desmier show the Inuit daily life at the dawn of the 21st century. In just 50 years, they have quite naturally created a new cultural balance between ancestral traditions and modern life. Today their great enemy is melting icebergs.

… put your snowshoes on.
Following the random trail of animal tracks, visitors can walk around the outer first floor covered in a thick layer of snow: a 300-meter walk for an initiation to snowshoe trekking, with Paris as the backdrop.

These genuine snowshoes3 available for big and small, will allow visitors to go on an unusual exploration of the native species of the Arctic and Antarctic: bears, narwhals, reindeer, snow geese, penguins, snow petrels, albatross…Immortalized in the large-format photos portraying animals captured on camera during numerous expeditions to the arctic regions, this fauna is endangered by global warming.

At 57 meters above Paris, icy thrills are guaranteed at Umiak*, a polar bar on the Eiffel Tower! Looking over the Champ de Mars, an ice-covered bar will welcome “trekkers” into its polar décor: life-size arctic animal sculptures (seals, polar foxes, guillemot…) and mannequins displaying traditional costumes made by Inuit. An unusual stopover for a drink, day or night.
1: The association Le Cercle Polaire (www.lecerclepolaire.com) aims at presenting the authentic scientific culture of the Arctic and Antarctic zones, trying to move forward the preservation of these lands. Le Cercel Polaire is sponsored by the national research institute CNRS, the Paul-Emile Victor Polar Institute and the French National Commission for UNESCO.
2: 60 countries are collaborating on 210 international projects doing research in the polar regions (www.ipy.org/).
3 (snowshoes in all sizes (4 years and up) free of charge for visitors)
4 Umiak is the name of an Inuit canoe.

Exhibit: : The Eiffel Tower in films |
Opening April 20th on the first floor of the Tower
At the end of the 19th century, the Eiffel Tower and filmmaking were the very essence of modernity thanks to engineers like Gustave Eiffel and the Lumiere brothers.
During the 20th century, the Eiffel Tower became the symbol of Paris and France throughout the world.
From the beginnings of cinema to today, the Tower has dominated film posters. Its presence sets the scene or gives the works a timeless, romantic quality.
This exhibit looks at a century of the Eiffel Tower on the silver screen via the 31 film posters on display.

The Eiffel Tower participated in ''5 minutes of Rest for the Planet'' |
La Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE, Eiffel Tower operating company) in collaboration with the Mayor of Paris joined forces for ''5 minutes of Rest for the Planet'', organized in parallel to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change meeting held in Paris, with the intention of influencing public opinion on energy use and global warming.
The Eiffel Tower night lighting system was turned off during 5 minutes on February 1st between 7:45 and 8:00 pm, with only the security lighting left on.
With this action, the SETE intended to show their commitment to sustainable development and the preservation of the planet.
On a more long-term basis, a number of daily actions have been instated such as recycling batteries, printer cartridges, outdated computer equipment, metals and gas lamps. The recycling of paper has effectively been in place for some time now.
Certain energy efficiency actions were also instated:
-A special ''green'' contract was drafted with the electrical company EDF (100% of the energy required comes from renewable energy).
-The campaign adopted in 2004-2005 concerning light bulb replacement on the Tower has already helped reduce energy use by 30%.
-A computer-automated schedule to control the heating and lighting on the Tower.
-Eliminating refrigeration systems with water loss.
The SETE is systematically overseeing the concessionary contracts so as to include a full paragraph on sustainable development (reducing energy consumption, sorting and recycling waste, suitable materials…).
The SETE intends to pursue and intensify its actions in these directions, notably by putting into place important renovation and modernization projects for the Tower during the years to come.
The Eiffel Tower energy consumption is at 7,000 MW/H, of which 9% is dedicated to the Tower illumination.

The Tower is open during long hours every day of the year – 9:30am to 11:45pm in winter, 9:00am to 12:45am in summer – with 30% of the visitors arriving during the evening hours. 55% go to the top of the Tower and 20% prefer the stairs when climbing to the 2nd floor (704 steps). Groups make up 13% of the total visitors.
Panoramic view and organized activities
The Paris vista seen from the monument is of course one of the major attractions. Visitors are also wooed by the structural force of the Tower, including its evening splendor when the Tower turns on its golden lighting and glittering lights that flash at the stroke of the hour.
A variety of activities are available on the monument (from the Cineffel films relating the history of the Tower to the Feroscope that explains its construction and painting as well as the Observatory that records the movement of the tower top...), appreciated by visitors that want to know more about Gustave Eiffel’s creation. More recently, the Tower has been offering other activities (exhibits, ice skating, roller skating or the labyrinth that is presently open to visitors) that appeal to visitors and generate media coverage contributing to the fame of the monument.

The agreement signed in May, 1981 between the CITY OF PARIS and the SNTE with the SAGI, which entrusted the management and daily operations of the Eiffel Tower to the SNTE, is to expire on December 31, 2005.

Three companies were being considered. On December 13, the Council of Paris attributed this public service to the SOCIÉTÉ D’EXPLOITATION DE LA TOUR EIFFEL (SETE). This appointment will take effect on Sunday, January 1, 2006 at midnight for a duration of 10 years.
SETE is a semi-public company, whose capital is mainly owned by the CITY OF PARIS (approximately 60 %).

A New Esplanade for the Eiffel Tower |
The Eiffel Tower square has been completely redone and the central octagon-shaped sandpit eliminated. Heavily damaged after numerous years of wear and tear, the dusty esplanade no longer provided the comfort nor aesthetic qualities expected by its guests from such a world-renowned monument.
The total surface sprawling from the Avenue Gustave Eiffel to the Quay Branly was stripped and covered anew with an asphalt coating. This material was chosen for its tint that blends well with the site, as well as for its resistance to shocks and bad weather.

The Eiffel Tower Closed Due to Snow |
For security reasons, the Tower had to close its doors to the public on Thursday, March 3rd and into the morning of the 4th, until the snow and
ice had melted away.
Salting the Tower platforms is impossible due to the corrosive factor on the metal and sprinkling sand on the ground is not allowed as it could cause problems for the elevator mechanism.
By Saturday, March 5th, the Eiffel Tower was back to normal and open to the public during its usual hours.

Eiffel Tower Exposed in Shanghai |
From October 13 – 20, 2004 the Eiffel Tower is being honored in Shanghai. This marks the second phase of a cultural exchange agreed upon by Jean-Bernard Bros & Mme Niu Weiping in France, and the President of the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai.
Last January, the Eiffel Tower had presented photos of the city of Shanghai and had organized a week around the Chinese cuisine at the restaurant Altitude 95.
For the week in Shanghai, the SNTE has organized a large format photo exhibition portraying the Eiffel Tower and the city of Paris as seen from the Tower, on display in the welcome hall of the Oriental Pearl, this most famous tower dedicated to telecommunications. Located in the heart of the modern Pudong work district on the shores of Huang Pu, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower features five spheres and is among the tallest buildings in the world at 468 meters (1535 feet).
As a well-frequented tourist spot – around 3 million visitors yearly, mostly Chinese, the Oriental Pearl Tower’s welcome hall is also the entrance to an incredible wax museum telling the history of Shanghai.

The Olympic Flame in Paris: Last Stop Eiffel Tower |
The festive spirit surrounding the Olympic Torch Relay made its way to the Eiffel Tower on June 25. Following a concert and motorcycle parade of the Republican Guard, the torch arrived at the Tower around 8:30 pm for its final stretch of the 50-kilometer course through Paris.
A relay runner ascended with the flame via the South pillar stairs, passing it on to 400-meter hurdle racing champion Stéphane Diagana, who descended the Tower from the first floor sliding down an alpinist rope to the foot of the monument.
The flame was then passed on to fencing sportswoman Laura Flessel who had the honors of finalizing the day’s relay.
Some 10,000 onlookers then gathered at the Champ de Mars, and took seats on the grass to watch that evening’s World Cup match on a giant screen under the glistening Eiffel Tower.

Mountain Bike Record Filmed for France 2 TV Program |
Wednesday, May 26 at 7:15 am, Xavi Casas, Andorran mountain bike champion, set out to climb the West pillar Tower stairs on his bike.
The 25-year old champion, seriously injured two years ago, had twice accomplished the feat, step by step up to the second floor. In order to beat his record, he had to climb more than 1,300 steps. The climb which included a service elevator – without ever touching ground – took him 34 minutes and 31 seconds, one half the time of the challenger who came in ten steps less than the winner. The champion’s new feat was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records by ex-basketball champion Barry White, who followed the course up on foot behind the cyclist…a feat of its own merit!
The weekly ''Envoyé Spécial'' TV program film team also followed the event, which will broadcast the mountain bike feat in October during a special program devoted to the 50th anniversary of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Reception for Gustave Eiffel Descendants |
In honor of the 80th anniversary marking the death of Gustave Eiffel,
the SNTE invited his descendants to the Eiffel Tower. A party of 20
arrived on Saturday, February 14, welcomed by Jean-Bernard Bros &
Jacques Marvillet.
Following the family portrait in front of the statue of their
illustrious forefather, they all went to lunch at the Altitude 95
restaurant. Some of the family members even went on a stroll at the top
of the Tower.
Gustave Eiffel had five children, four of which had several children of
their own. They have formed an association, Association of Gustave
Eiffel Descendants, presided by Sylvain Yeatman-Eiffel (center of
photo). Sylvain Yeatman-Eiffel is the great, great grandson of Claire
Salles who is one of the more familiar children; she is represented in
the reconstituted office of Gustave Eiffel on the top of the Tower.
Gustave Eiffel died in 1923 at the age of 91. Today his descendants have
reached the sixth generation.

Oriental Pearl Tower Meets Eiffel Tower, Jan 28 – Feb 1, 2004 |
The Eiffel Tower invites its visitors to discover the Chinese gourmet and cultural delights arrived directly from the Oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai on Wednesday Jan 28 to Saturday Feb 1, 2004.
This operation is the fruition of an agreement, in the framework of an exchange program put in place between France and China, signed by Paris’deputy mayor and Eiffel Tower president Jean-Bernard Bros and the Oriental Pearl Tower president Ms Niu Weiping in Dec 2003.
A Touch of China on the First Floor
Adopting Chinese New Year décor and colors, the Eiffel Tower first floor is presenting:
* A large photo exposition on the terrace overlooking the Champ de Mars, representing the Oriental Pearl Tower and its state of the art architecture.
* A culinary tasting of Chinese specialties, served at the Altitude 95 restaurant. The menu was especially concocted by three Chinese chefs who came expressly from Shanghai for the occasion.
* Each day at 5pm (17h), a demonstration of the traditional tea ceremony at the Altitude 95 bar performed by two hostesses from the Oriental Pearl Tower.
* And souvenirs to correspond with your “Chinese” visit, at the Pavillion Ferrié boutique.
The Oriental Pearl Tower
* Measuring 468 meters (1535 feet) high, the Oriental Pearl Tower is also a tower accessible to visitors, with three floors made out of pearls. The view over the modern city of Shanghai is unbeatable and it offers a revolving restaurant. The basement level houses a wax museum representing the history of the city.
* This Pearl Tower welcomes three million visitors each year - Chinese for the most part - and like the Eiffel Tower, it is an important telecommunications transmitter.

A new photo station is set to open on the Tower’s lower level of the second floor (next to the snack bar) during the month of December. This new attraction for Eiffel Tower visitors will deliver souvenir photos in the spirit of 1900, taken with a camera from the period – a genuine collector’s item.
This ''Globus Ernemann'' studio camera was manufactured in 1900 in Germany. It has been transformed to accommodate digital picture taking at the rate of one photo (21 x 29,7 centimetres or 8 1/4 x 11 ¼ inches) every 90 seconds.
Visitors can compose their own group arrangements and choose from between more than thirty costumes (men, women and children) for this sepia photo souvenir. And to complete the authentic look, the backdrop is the Eiffel Tower metal beams.
The Photo Studio will be open the same hours as the Tower.

The Fire on the Tower last July 22nd |
The fire that broke out on the Tower top last July 22nd was fortunately a minor incident. A group of lighting cables located just above the 4th floor on the outside of the Tower was at the origin of the fire that projected spectacular black smoke into the sky. The installations
operating at that level received only superficial damage.
The personnel on duty that evening reacted professionally and proceeded to perfectly control the incident. The 3,000 visitors were evacuated from the Tower rapidly and calmly.
Unfortunately the fire received an exaggerated attention from the media, in France as well as elsewhere, proving once again that public affection for the Eiffel Tower is monumental.

113 Years of Success |
From 1889 to 2002, the Eiffel Tower has welcomed 200 million visitors of all ages and origins from the four corners of the globe, who have come to admire the "Iron Lady" and the city panorama from its 324-meter height. An impressive statistic that confirms the monument's reputation as the most visited site with an entry fee.
Throughout the years, interest in the Tower has only grown stronger as 100 million visitors were accounted for during the past 20 years. Since 1998, the more than 6 million visitors each year represent and average of 8,000 per day during the slow season and 30,000 per day during school and summer vacations.
Despite the slowed tourist flux during the year following the tragedy of September 11, the Tower did not experience a drop in visitors and will once again finish the year with more than 6 million visitors for 2002, with increased statistics for the last months of the year.
As a symbol of Paris and France, the Eiffel Tower's success is undoubtedly linked to its fascinating history, its aesthetics and architectural feat as well as its relationship to industrial development and technological advancements of the 20th century. Whether the Tower reigns over certain events or is the theater for others, it remains one of the world's most visible landmarks.

The Glittering Tower Returns |
|
We all remember the breathtaking fireworks display the Eiffel Tower donned for the arrival of the new millennium and those stunning glittering lights that lit up every hour for a few minutes as soon as dusk arrived. We then saw the addition of a lighthouse beam circling the city from the Tower top. Although the millennium glittering light installation was a temporary one that shone during 18 months (from January 1, 2000 - July 14, 2001), the new installation to light up as of June 2003 is projected to be in place for 10 years. A new installation of 20,000 lamps will find its home on the Eiffel Tower. As of June, the Tower will display its glittering lights once again!

Modernization Projects in the Works |
|
A well-frequented monument requires a good maintenance and constant improvements. In the 80s, the big project was to "lighten up" the structure of the Tower. Every seven years marks the beginning of a paint job from head to foot - the Tower is getting its 18th paint job at this time. Keeping a tight watch on the Tower's maintenance is an ongoing task, which costs 17 million euros each year, resulting in a monument in excellent condition. The next projects include the modernization of the elevators, some renovations on the first floor and new sign indicators. But most importantly, the work on the ground level in progress will continue with the aim of better arranging this space to welcome the public.

''Sleepless Nights'' at the Tower - A Success Story |
|
Organized by the Mayor of Paris, project ''Sleepless Nights'', which featured the Eiffel Tower as one of the venues, turned out to be a popular stop welcoming 18,245 people between 6pm and 7am (with 867 present between 3am and 7am) the night of October 5th. The largely Parisian crowd was composed of families and young people out to discover the monument on a special occasion. Despite long lines, an atmosphere of adventure prevailed, and the hostesses were taken aback by the visitor appreciation expressed on leaving. Many were those who endured the long line to enter ''the bedroom'' of artist Sophie Calle, which was installed on top of the Tower. Once they arrived, each person was given 5 minutes to tell her a bedtime story.

Guests, members of the press and the photography world will be received by Jean-Bernard Bros, President of the SNTE, in the Gustave Eiffel Room. The Latest Visitor Count at the Eiffel Tower |
|
The statistics for 2002, up to September 23, show a slight decrease, 209,000 less than the same period in 2001. Tourism in general slowed considerably following the 9-11 terrorist attack in New York, and the effect was felt at the Tower during the first months of the year. At the end of July, the number of visitors had dropped by 250,000 (-6.5%) as compared to 2001 statistics. By August, it seemed clear that people were travelling again, and the Tower was not snubbed in the least - 824,717 visitors, a slight increase from August 2001 statistics. The month of September looks equally promising, with an additional 60,000 visitors over the previous year, especially since most monument visitor figures were on the decline.

The Magnificent Bastille Day Pyrotechnics |
Celebrating the bicentennial of the birth of Victor Hugo, the Bastille Day fireworks display unfolded across the river from the Tower at the Trocadero on July 14th. Year 2002 entrance fees...in euros |
As of January 1, the European countries will change in their country’s currency for the new European currency, the euro. The city of Paris has decided to not take advantage of this moment to increase rates, but to simply demand the equivalent fees in euros.
| | 1st floor | 2nd floor | Top | | Lift | | | | | Adults | 3,70 € | 6,90 € | 9,90 € | | Children (under 12) | 2,10 € | 3,80 € | 5,30 € | | | | | | | Stairs | Access 3,00 € | |
To simplify the task, the Tower's operating company, SNTE, has decided that as of January 1 all payments will be accepted exclusively in euros, even though officially there is to be a period of transition until February 17 during which time francs are still accepted. Visitors arriving at the Tower will be able to exchange currencies on site at the ground floor change office or at the West Pillar (which will soon be closed for renovations), set up so as to accommodate such exchange needs. A New Look for the Tower's Arches |
The refurbishing of the Tower's four decorative arches began in 1998. First one was to the west, followed by the southern arch in 1999, now to be followed by the northern arch.
And let us not forget that each scaffolding built for this purpose is in itself an enormous undertaking: 45 meters high, 300 tons, 30,000 spare parts, 60 kilometers of piping...
The rennovations are expected to begin on October 29 and continue through to March 10, 2002. It will then be the turn of the last of the four arches to get its maintenance, from February through June 2002.

And the Sparkling Lights Went Out |
|
The glittering Eiffel Tower has been illuminating Paris' nights for the past 18 months. This magnificent lighting was installed to honor the celebration of the year 2000, and was never intended to be a permanent fixture. Since the Tower's glittering light system was designed to last only one year and has well exceeded that, order has been given to end the light show, which glitters for 10 minutes on the hour every hour, as of July 13th. All is not long lost though, as the Paris Council ordered a study with the aim of re-instating the Tower's lighting gear, which could be as soon as the beginning of the year 2003 after the Tower gets a new painting overhaul. Fireworks Display and Eiffel Tower Sparkle for Bastille Day |
|
The Tower will switch on its glittering lights for a non-stop performance from 21:30 to 22:30. The fireworks display that will follow is to be shot off from the Trocadero, while the Tower will be completely switched off during the 35-minutes show. Then it will glow once again, showing off all its shades of gold mixed with sparkles and the lighthouse beams until 2:10 in the morning. The golden glare and the lighthouse beams will gradually fade out, when at 5:00 am only the sparkling lights remain.

Madama Tussaud Specialists Give New Life to Gustave |
Every two or three years, the figures represented in Gustave Eiffel's office need a little refurbishing. And to that end, specialists arrived from the reputed Madame Tussaud's wax museum in London. The heads and arms of the three models were dismantled and carried to a work space imperatively lit by natural daylight only, a journey that brought out the chuckles in many a visitor at the sight of the technicians walking around the Tower heading to the North Pillar with a head or arm under wing.
The heads got shampooed, the faces and hands repainted and two days later Gustave Eiffel and his daughter Claire as well as their distinguished guest, Thomas Edison, were good as new and back in their places on top of the Tower.

|
Matt Lauer was causing quite a stir among the American tourists at the Tower on May 9th. A friendly face to NBC morning viewers, Matt Lauer presented a two-hour special program live from a set installed at the foot of the East Pillar. Among the program highlights, a fly-cam attached to a minature helicopter fixed on the roof of the Altitude 95 restaurant broadcast some pretty amazing images of the monument. The program also included a 6-minute presentation of the Tower and its machinery, and Bertrand Lemoine was one of the special guests - historian specialized in the Eiffel Tower.

The Tower as a Symbol ! |
|
The Eiffel Tower was quite visible in a number of ad campaigns recently, from sport clothing to antiques, but by far the most spectacular was the official poster celebrating the 16th edition of the Paris Film Festival. Featuring a photo of the city with the Tower in its night lighting, these posters were strewn up and down the Champs Elysees as well as in the metros. And the Festival winners walked away with Eiffel Tower trophies! Speaking of cinema, the illustration for the latest Rugrats movie included the Parisian symbol of course.

The Eiffel Tower's Theatre |
|
Among the ''Parisian Theatres of Yesteryears'' - latest book by historian Philippe Cheveau - is the 280-seat theatre that opened in June 1892 on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower between the North and West Pillars. It was the 19th century playwright Alphonse Franck who inaugurated the auditorium with the variety show ''Paris up in the Air.'' Until the beginning of the war in 1914, many other shows of all types brought the space to life all year long, every evening - comedy, drama, vaudeville, mime, operettas, ballet and variety shows - all making some sort of reference to the Tower in their titles (prerequisite to playing there). This theatre of yesteryears is today a restaurant.

The Eiffel Tower Gets Taller... Up to 324 meters |
|
The recent work on TDF's antennas produced an increase to the height of the monument, from precisely 318.7 to 324 meters (1,063 feet), picking up 5 1/2 meters as a result. When constructed in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was only 312 meters high and the tallest structure in the world. Then in 1929, the Chrysler Building in New York City topped the Tower. Then in 1929, the Chrylser Building in New York City topped the Tower measuring in at 319 meters. In 1957, a broadcast antenna was added bringing the Tower to 320 meters, its stable height up to the new millenium.

A total lunar eclipse will be visible in Paris on January 9, 2001 between 19:30 and 22:00. For the occasion, two French Astronomy organizations are inviting eclipse admirers to join them on the second floor of the Tower where telescopes will be installed and questions answered. In April 1996, a similar operation took place at the Tower in honor of the eclipse that was visible all over Europe. An eclipse happens when the sun, earth and the moon are perfectly aligned, whereby the earth cast its shadow on the moon.

The Eiffel Tower Prepares for New Year's Eve |
|
The Eiffel Tower will salute the third millennium in sparkling blue at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve and will continue to flash its colors all night long. The following night, the Tower will once again begin its rhythm of sparkling lights every hour on the hour for ten minutes, but in its new color. This blue tint is obtained by placing filters on each one of the existing 20,000 lights bulbs. In order to prepare this blue salute, the sparkling lights will not sparkle during four nights, December 27 - 30. Elsewhere, a study is being conducted to evaluate the feasibility of turning this millennium lighting into a permanent Tower feature, as the system in place was designed to be a temporary installation.

And the piece de resistance, the show of light and fireworks which made the planet dream last December 31st, projected on a vertical screen, bringing alive once again that magical countdown to midnight.

The runway show was aired on different TV channels. The press unanimously praised the originality and elegance of the 'Gaultier' Eiffel Towers.

Siudmak's Fantasy World at the Eiffel Tower |
The Eiffel Tower is proud to exhibit the incredible paintings of famous Polish painter Siudmak. His vivid and imaginative painting borders on the science-fiction theme, a theme dear to the Eiffel Tower who has created a literary science-fiction prize.
The exhibit on display in the Ferrié pavilion on the first floor is Siudmak's second major art retrospective. The first took place at the Paris' Museum of Modern Art ten years ago.
The artist projects his work in the third millenium offering the visitor a chance to reflect on the human being and the universe. He offers a futuristic vision painted as real as possible. Siudmak has perfectly mastered the hyperrealism technique. The visitors at the Eiffel Tower can thus admire his dream-like world.

The Peace Wall behind the Eiffel Tower |
The monumental sculpture 'Peace Wall', designed by Clara Halter and architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, has been placed for three months behind the Eiffel Tower at the Champ de Mars.
The transparent Wall is made of two glass panels on which the word 'peace' are engraved in thirty-two languages and thirteen alphabets, of a huge esplanade made of exotic wood, and of inox pillars spelling out infinitely the same word.
Loosely inspired by the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, each visitor has the possibility to leave a message in the wall cracks built in intentionally.
After the Champ de Mars site, the Wall may be installed definitively behind the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
